This group is awesome! No sitting around talking about movies. No dreaming. No b.s. They make movies!
I was at a mixer for marketers, advertisers, designers, and communicators. When I was leaving, I ran into one of my former students. He said he was the president of the Houston Film Organization and wanted me to join them for some food afterward. I joined him and two others at a restaurant. He told me all about his vision and what they were doing, so I decided to come to the shoot they were having that Saturday. They were shooting a short film called Silent Envy. Wow was it fun being the boom operator! After that day, I attended another session which involved a speaker who is a script writer, and a woman who was an assistant director (or producer–I can’t remember) for a feature documentary. Next, I attended the second shoot for Silent Envy and I was the sound operator while someone else held the boom pole. (Do you know what a C47 is? It is a clothespin!). For my fourth meeting, they had a script writing contest. Anybody could write a script, then they had a day where people would act it out impromtu and somebody would read the script. They voted on the top 2 and then they would proceed to produce them. For my fifth session, I tried acting. I quickly memorized some lines and did my best. That day they were having tryouts and training for different roles. You could sign up to be a director, actor, gaffer, best boy, prop master, boom operator, camera man, assistant director, or producer.
I did in fact stop going because I need to focus more on my business, but I am writing this for anybody who is interested in film and movies.
Also, I did originally join the group in hopes of designing a movie poster, flyer, Flash Web site, or some sort of marketing piece. I was going to design the movie poster for Silent Envy, but due to some camera errors, the film was canceled. You can view my comp below.
